About

A data management plan (DMP) is a document that outlines a project's practical approach to what data will be created, how it will be processed, analysed and how data of long-term value will be archived and shared. They are often created as part of grant applications or within the first few months of a project being set up. The DMP plays an ever increasingly important role given the centrality of digital data to practically all research activity. Through their creation they identify and overcome data management barriers to the research process before they occur.

To aid researchers in creating effective Data Management Plans (DMPs), Digital Curation Centre and UC3 team at the California Digital Library have developed DMPonline. The tool provides detailed guidance and links to general and organisational resources and walks a researcher through the process of generating a comprehensive plan tailored to specific DMP requirements. DMPonline invite you to peruse the DMPRoadmap GitHub wiki to learn how to get involved in the project. You can also report bugs and request new features via GitHub Issues.

Newcastle University have adopted and customised DMPonline to provide NCL researchers with tailored guidance. If you need more information about this tool or how to use it, please contact us by sending an email to rdm@ncl.ac.uk.
